The ACCLIMATE project supports the global effort to align national and international climate strategies with the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals. Through cutting-edge scientific research, modelling innovation, and co-creation with stakeholders, the project seeks to strengthen the design, transparency, and implementation of climate action.
ACCLIMATE's work is structured around the following specific objectives:
ACCLIMATE develops an assessment framework to evaluate the transparency, consistency, and clarity of national climate targets. Based on this, it proposes recommendations for strengthening the guidance and procedures under the Paris Agreement, contributing directly to UNFCCC processes through formal submissions and academic publications.
The project identifies needs for improvement in the adequacy, fairness, and feasibility of existing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and long-term strategies in both developed and developing countries. This is achieved through country-level studies and a synthesis report, offering targeted recommendations for improvement.
ACCLIMATE enhances the capacity of national teams to develop and assess climate mitigation and adaptation strategies, integrating climate resilience into pathway design. This includes methodological guidance, technical modelling improvements, and scenario development for EU and non-EU countries.
The project delivers detailed national, sectoral, and global pathways aligned with the Paris Agreement. These incorporate the role of ecosystems, non-CO₂ emissions, climate impacts, and socioeconomic synergies and trade-offs. The work enhances understanding of mitigation potential and supports sector-specific transformations for a just and sustainable transition.
Based on qualitative policy analysis and quantitative modelling, ACCLIMATE delivers actionable recommendations to improve policy packages, enhance coherence across national strategies, and unlock transformative change across sectors and systems.
ACCLIMATE explores ways to strengthen multilateral climate governance by analysing how international initiatives and EU external climate policies can drive more ambitious and effective climate action. A key focus is the Global Stocktake (GST) under the Paris Agreement, a periodic process that assesses collective progress towards global climate goals. By evaluating the outcomes and influence of the GST, the project identifies pathways to enhance international coordination and accountability in achieving climate targets.
To ensure relevance and impact, the project engages with national stakeholders and global experts through structured co-creation formats such as national engagement processes and international Sectoral Conversations. These ensure mutual learning and stakeholder ownership of results.
